Workplace Age Discrimination Still Flourishes in America

WORKPLACE AGE DISCRIMINATION STILL FLOURISHES IN AMERICA

In a December 2019 article in AARP magazine, the author Joe Kita demonstrated that ageism routinely exists in today’s employment market. However, the article did not address how to work around the obstacles mentioned.  Our experience guiding age 50+ clients demonstrates there are several approaches that can help you overcome those obstacles.  Are you in this age group?   Here are a few points to consider.  If you would like to discuss any one point listed, or tell me about your personal experience, send me an email at nsynko@SynkoAssociates.com  or call at 734.332.8800 x 213.

  1. Search for most any related entry level job within a large well-known organization. Getting your foot in the door makes you an internal candidate for job upgrades.

  2. Volunteer at a local hospital or well-known non-profit organization.  Do the extras as if you were employed.

  3. Take a course at a community college; they are a low-cost alternative to update or learn new skills.  An example of courses can be seen at Washtenaw Community College.

  4. Take online courses. You will have to research options within your profession. You can always begin with LinkedIn Learning.

  5. Network with your friend’s children, even your nieces and nephews.  When you are over 50, you may overlook the wealth of information they have.

  6. Stay fit and well groomed. Update your hairstyle, eyewear, clothing, etc.  We have a complete Update Yourself Checklist.  If you are interested in learning more about this important topic, send me an email.

  7. Know your qualifications and especially the differentiators that set you apart.  No one gets hired for what they have in common with everyone else.  What is unique about you?

  8. Make certain you are on LinkedIn with a well-developed, yet succinct profile.  Use LinkedIn to send connection invites within your profession – always include an introductory note.

  9. Be realistic about prevailing wages.  Give more than you get; it will payoff

  10. Be psychologically prepared that it may take longer than you anticipate. Far too many people give up way too soon. If what you have done so far isn’t working – then you must “change it up.”
